Sprechen auf Deutsch: Understanding German Terminology
| Trocken (dry) | These are wines that have less than 9 grams/liter of residual sugar. |
| Halbtrocken (half-dry) | These are wines that have between 9 grams/liter and 18 grams/liter of residual sugar. |
| Fruchtsüß (fruity sweetness) or Restsüß (residual sweetness) |
These are the terms for all wines with a residual sugar level above 18 grams/liter. |
| Feinherb (difficult to translate…it’s close to terms such as fine-austere or fine-bitter) | This is used mostly in the Mosel and has been allowed by law after a trial a few years ago. You find this expression on the label. |
